Bitcoin : Noob question: Where is the ledger stored? What does it mean to “sync to the ledger”? What are wallets syncing to?

Most wallets these days are described to “sync to the ledger”. What does that mean? What is your wallet software syncing to exactly? What does it connect to using the internet?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I’m new to this, any answers are appreciated.
