Bitcoin : Technical question – 1 vs 6 vs 4000 confirmations

I’m a long time BTC enthusiast and user. I am technical, but not a developer or technical enough to truly understand the preferences that certain services or wallets have for a specific number of confirmations.

How exactly is it possible for a transaction to obtain 1 confirmation before being rejected by the network? What’s fundamentally different about 1 confirmation vs 6?

My understanding is that nodes are constantly checking transactions in the mempool ro validate their authenticity, even between blocks. I am looking to better understand the network sequence of events to understand why 1 confirmation is meaningfully less reliable than 2 or 6 or 4000 confirmations.

Thanks in advabce.
