Ethereum update: Expansion: cheap cards Vs expensive cards
I thought I’d throw out my 2c on some investigating I’m doing for my plan this autumn to expand my own setup.
I’ve been mining for about 8 months now. Hit my RoI a little while ago, and I’m now working on a plan to expand. I’m looking at this 3 ways: high end GPUs, low end GPUs, or something completely different.
By high end GPUs, I mean Vegas, 1080tis, 104-100s, or whatever new stuff Nvidia comes out with. The obvious pros are things like longevity and hashrates. The cons are things like price, efficiency (i.e., higher power draw so bigger PSUs) and demand.
By low end GPUs, I mean 1050tis, 560s, maybe even 1060s and 570s. The pros of these are cost and power draw, with the cons being hashrates and longevity. Almost the opposite of the others.
So here’s my argument. For the cost of one of the higher end cards, multiples of the lower end ones are almost as efficient. And, the lower end ones are a lot more available too. In an effort to keep this short, a mention on the new Nvidia cards. Are we likely to see 3 or 4 times the performance for a pricetag similar to what the current top cards are? I very much doubt it. We didn’t see it with the vegas, so I won’t be holding my breath.
The options I’m looking at are essentially a rig of about 12 x 1060 Vs about 3 1080tis. You don’t have to do too much research to see the better option.
So here’s my question for all of you. Am I missing something really obvious or are people just being foolish going for smaller rigs of high end cards?
