Ethereum update: Will DAG smart contract blockchains work? Why not?

I hear a lot of people say that smart contract platforms that are running on a DAG (e.g. Fantom (maybe Iota)) won’t work in real life. Can someone explain why not? Something to do with ordering the tx’s. What else?

Their promise of infinite scalability of course sounds great (too great?).
