Ripple update: Using the Ledger as a store of data

I’m curious. Ripple has utilized XRP as a bridge currency. Transactions are logged on the ledger and validated by external validators. Can this be done with large amounts of data. Say I wanted to build a data entry system on top of the ledger. Is this possible? Is it worth doing? I don’t have the tech background, but my industry could really use something like this if it is indeed possible.
