Blockchain : Topics that everyone should know

Instead of watching some tv-shows I would like to read some articles about what can we do with blockchain. Obviously there are things like currency and smart contract. But also things like digital signatures, digital assets and many more.
So I would like to ask you guys. What topics should I know.

What is the Blockchain?
A block chain is a transaction database shared by all nodes participating in a system based on the Bitcoin protocol. A full copy of a currency’s block chain contains every transaction ever executed in the currency. With this information, one can find out how much value belonged to each address at any point in history.
