CryptoCurrency : Cryptocurrencies and sustainability question

So I have some concerns and I would like to hear your opinion.

Blockchain should bring major developments for our societies in a near future and all the ongoing projects are super interesting, no doubt about this.

But my question is, most models are based on mining which is pushing industries and market trends that do not seem sustainable in terms of resource consumption.

Do you think that we may hit a wall at the some point of time because all this waste of electric power will be a serious problem if blockchains become widely used or I missed something?

Do you know if there are other alternatives currently explored to fix this issue? Shouldn’t protocols include some constraints on energy consumption for miners?

Thanks for your inputs.
