I’ve looked into this a ton and find a lot about how secure it is by saying “there are a zillion combines these words can be!” or it doesn’t answer the “how” part of the question and people just say “you just put in the passphrase and it restores all of your money!”. But I can’t find anything about how actually works. I am by no means a cryptography expert, but the only way I can imagine it working is that you query a database for that 12 word passphrase and return any private keys and ticker symbols associated with it.

If it were a single currency then maybe the passphrase can be translated to a private key through the encryption of that coin but I cannot think of a way a single pass phrase works for multiple coins.

Obviously querying a database wouldn’t be secure at all and no one would trust all of their private keys in some unknown database. So that can’t be how it’s working. Can someone explain this to me?

Thank you.
