Ethereum update: Focusing on changes to Ethereum’s PoW algorithm is not the answer

It will only use up valuable developer time and community energy in agreeing on the changes to be made. Proof of work was only ever planned to be a temporary solution, and locking developers into a game of cat and mouse with hardware manufacturers trying to fight the centralising effect is a losing battle and a waste of valuable time which will negatively impact the ecosystem.

If you’re worried about the mining centralisation threat posed by bespoke hardware including ASICs then you should not be putting hurdles in the way of the real solution which is already being implemented – proof of stake.
