Ethereum update: Is it *really* possible to be ASIC resistant?

It seems that no matter what the algorithm is, as long as there is great money to be made, someone will put up the resources to design an ASIC solution. Is it practical to just change the algo every so often? Could a coin be designed with algo-switching as a built in feature so that would be easier to do nad not require a fork?
