Ripple update: Banks creating their own token on ripple xrapid?

I heard from a colleague at work that banks will be able to create their own token – instead of xrp – on the ripple xrapid platform. Is this possible? This seems wrong to me.
So basically, is there a coupling between the xrapid ledger and the xrp token (which is the case in all cryptocurrencies I know of) ?
